University of Utah David Gardner Hall Building 3 Addition/Expansion Adaptive Reuse Student Union Center
The renovation of Gardner Hall and the addition of a new Concert Hall have expanded instructional and support spaces, allowing for the complete consolidation of the University's Music Department. Gardner Hall, a 30,000 SF facility, now features a two-story addition to the original four-story structure, along with an 80% seismic upgrade to the existing building. The restored Room 200 serves as a flexible venue for small to mid-sized recitals, receptions, and university events, while also functioning as the main entrance and lobby for the new Concert Hall.
The Concert Hall addition features a 700-seat performance venue, rehearsal spaces, a recording studio, and additional studios and practice rooms. A transparent enclosure connects the new addition to Gardner Hall, preserving the distinct architectural identities of both buildings while introducing natural light into the shared space and emphasizing Gardner Hall's north façade. The structural system utilizes a steel moment frame to accommodate the glazing and open interior volumes.
